What is Psychosexual Therapy?

Sex Therapy, also called Psychosexual Therapy, is often combined with Relationship Therapy.  It is a talking therapy with it's roots based in psychotherapy.

When first looking at a sexual problem, physical causes must first be considered, so a visit to the GP is often recommended.  If no physical cause is found, then the issue can often lie within a person’s mind and emotions, and this is where sex therapy can be a solution.

What sets sex therapy apart from standard psychotherapy is not only the subject matter, but also that you may be required to do tasks in between therapy sessions.  Sex therapy is not only about talking to gain an understanding of yourself and the way you think, but it often has a practical element.  Depending on the issue, I may instruct you to carry out exercises at home between sessions that will help in making progress towards a solution for your problem.

Sex therapy can also be helpful when used in conjunction with medical treatments for a sexual problem.  The emotional fallout from such treatments can be difficult to deal with and can affect a relationship in many ways.  Talking through these difficult emotions can help resolve feelings and help head off future problems.  A medical intervention may also result in practical, physical changes, so tips, tricks and learning about alternative ways to have an intimate relationship may be what's required from therapy.

You don’t have to answer any questions you feel uncomfortable with or do any exercises that you don’t want to do.  I understand that sometimes it takes a few sessions to feel comfortable talking about yourself, your relationships and your body.  I don't expect that you will say everything that you may want, or need to, straight away.  We work at your pace, and within your levels of comfort.

Your relationship does not need to be in crisis to benefit from Therapy
